Most of us have battled with a clogged drain at some point in our lives. For some of us, it has become more of a frustrating routine. Many people automatically call a plumber to fix the problem, however, it is important to note that a clogged drain can be dealt with quite easily; with the help of some tools.
How do you clear out the blockage?
Most bathtubs drains become clogged with bits of hair or some other substances. The first step you should take when dealing with a clog is to try and observe what is causing the blockage and try to pull it out by hand. Obviously the idea of pulling out the substance yourself is not appealing by any means, however it will save you on a lot of expense if you decide to do so. If you cannot pull it out yourself you can try using a bended wire coat hanger or even a pair of tweezers.
Try using a Plunger
If you cannot pull out the substance causing the clog easily yourself, you should try using a plunger. A plunger is cost-effective and very easy to use. There should be enough water covering the bottom part of the plunger. Then place the plunger over the central part of the drain and push down and up several times exerting pressure,
The plunger method usually works in forcing the clogged material to move away. To test whether the clog has been removed, once you lift up the plunger the drain should clear away. If it has not then you may need to use the plunger several more times.
Try using a Snake
If you have tried the plunger method with no results, you should try using the snake. You begin by guiding the snake into the clogged drain whilst turning the handle in a dextral manner. Hopefully the clog should be within easy reach, and this would then be easy to unclog. If it is not, then you will have to feed the snake through the opening of the overflow. This should hopefully solve your problem.
In most case scenarios, the plunger and the snake method does work in clearing out clogs. However, you may be dealing with a clog that is of particular nuisance and nothing seems to be working. If this is the case then the next best solution would be to call a professional plumber. Only do this if all else has failed, as you will be aware that the repair work will be expensive.
Ways to avoid clogging up your bathtub
Most bathtub clogs occur because of particles of soap that latch onto hair. You can avoid this by not dropping bits of soap into the drain
It has been recommended that once every four weeks you should pour boiling water into the drain in your bathtub. This has the effect of melting any particles that build up
If you look around your house you will find useful household items such as baking soda or vinegar. These chemicals can also dissolve any other particle build up that causes the clogs
