Now that Apple has released the iPad, people will have to think long and hard whether or not to buy that basic ebook reader, or splurge a little and get Apple's "all-in-one" device. Now it's going to be a decision between the Kindle 2, the Nook, the Sony Reader, or the new iPad. Now that Apple has released the iPad, people will have to think long and hard whether or not to buy that basic ebook reader, or splurge a little and get Apple's "all-in-one" device. Now it's going to be a decision between the Kindle 2, the Nook, the Sony Reader, or the new iPad. For many reasons, it could be argued it's going to be a simple decision between two of those devices now- The iPad or Kindle 2.
The Kindle 2- Amazon has never been confused as to what this device will do. It's an ebook reader and doesn't try to be anything else. It could be seen as the simplest design of the ebook readers with it's push button navigation and complete gray-scale display. Obviously there is not any added excitement to this device unless you are reading a great book on it.
The Nook, however, has been half-heartedly trying to be a pseudo- super device, with it's Android software and hope that developers will create apps for the ebook reader. What apps? Are they going to work on the 1" navigation screen? That's some pretty big restrictions for a developer, isn't it? Maybe we will see.
Sony's Reader Daily Edition is a "super" ebook reader with a touch screen, and ability to turn the reading screen on it's side to read. Wireless and 3G are included just like the Nook and Kindle 2. It offers a larger screen and better usability overall than most ebook readers.
IPad and other ebook readers- With the release of the iPad, it could be argued that some of these devices above have completely lost their appeal.
The Nook has always been a wonder to some as to what it is trying to be. It has a color screen and robust operating system to attract developers. So is it trying to be an iPad-like device? Or is it trying to be an ebook reader first and foremost?
The Sony Reader Daily Edition has a lot of features that many will find quite appealing. Adding all the new features has Sony pricing it a bit higher, though. So if someone is spending that much on a device, is it a real stretch of the imagination that they will just pay a little more to get the iPad?
So now we have the Kindle 2 standing strong as the basic ebook reader in the market. There is no comparison between the iPad and the Kindle 2. The Kindle 2 is much cheaper and is an ebook reader. The iPad is much more expensive and is an all-in-one device. The confusion isn't there.
Therefore, it looks like the iPad and Kindle 2 will be left standing when the smoke clears from the war of the ebook readers.
Apple's iPad and Kindle 2 will probably gain even more ground on the competition with their international service.
